Malcolm occlusion(?) issue

Hi folks,

So I'm working on making phonemes for Malcolm lip sync and I've run into an issue with what I think is the occlusion of the scene. When I try to manipulate Malcolm's various lip controls, the lighting around the lip will become off-kilter as shown below

This is what the lips are supposed to look like.

This is what the lips start looking like after I scrub the timeline. When I manipulate the lip controllers this issue disappears until I scrub the timeline again.

If I manipulate the controller even minimally, the issue will disappear only to reappear when I start scrubbing the timeline.
